Griggsville was founded in 1836 by William Griggs, a settler from New York. He purchased the land from the federal government and named the town after himself. The town was incorporated in 1854.
Griggsville was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in Canada. The town was also a major center for the production of woodenware, such as buckets, tubs, and churns.

Griggsville is located at 39°51'25" North, 90°37'45" West (39.856944, -90.629167). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all land.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
