Gibson City Summary

Gibson City is a small city located in Ford County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area.

History

Gibson City was founded in 1855 by William Gibson, a settler from Ohio. The town was originally called Gibson Station, as it was a stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1872 and the name was changed to Gibson City.

Geography

Gibson City is located at 40°25′N 88°20′W (40.4133, -88.3337). According to the 2010 census, Gibson City has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), all land.

Economy

Gibson City is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant for the Ford Motor Company, a grain elevator, and a variety of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of restaurants, including a McDonald's, a Subway, and a Dairy Queen.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,717 people, 1,541 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,945.3 people per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 899.5 per square mile (347.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
