Forsyth Summary
Forsyth is a village located in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Forsyth was founded in 1854 by William Forsyth, a Scottish immigrant. The village was originally known as "Forsyth Station" due to its location on the Illinois Central Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Geography
Forsyth is located at 39°51'25"N 88°51'45"W (39.856944, -88.862472). According to the 2010 census, Forsyth has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), all land.
Economy
Forsyth is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and several restaurants. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.21% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
