Fillmore Summary

History

Fillmore, Illinois is a small village located in Montgomery County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Sangamon River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Springfield. The village was founded in 1836 by William and Mary Fillmore, who were among the first settlers in the area. The Fillmores named the village after their son, William Fillmore Jr.
The village was originally a farming community, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and oats. In the late 1800s, the village began to grow and develop, with the construction of a railroad line and the establishment of a post office. The railroad line connected Fillmore to nearby towns, allowing for the transportation of goods and services.
In the early 1900s, the village experienced a period of growth and prosperity. Several businesses opened in the village, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a bank. The village also had a school, a library, and a newspaper.
