Fairmount Summary

History

The small town of Fairmount, Illinois is located in Vermilion County, about 25 miles south of Champaign. The town was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio, led by William and Mary Ann (Henderson) Fair. The town was named after the Fair family, and the first post office was established in 1872.
The town grew slowly, but steadily, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a bank. The town also had a school, a church, and a library.
In the early 1900s, the town was also home to a number of coal mines, which provided employment for many of the town’s residents. The coal mines were eventually closed, but the town continued to thrive as an agricultural center.
