East Alton Summary

East Alton is a village located in Madison County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The population was 6,301 at the 2010 census.

History

East Alton was founded in 1853 by William G. Minor, who named it after his hometown of Alton, Illinois. The village was incorporated in 1872.
East Alton was the site of a major industrial complex owned by the Olin Corporation. The complex included a large ammunition plant, a chemical plant, and a brass mill. The ammunition plant was the largest employer in the village, and it was the largest employer in Madison County. The plant closed in 1992, and the complex was demolished in the late 1990s.

Geography

East Alton is located at 38°51'25" North, 90°5'25" West (38.856944, -90.090278). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 3.14 square miles, all land.

East Alton's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several large industrial plants, including a paper mill, a steel mill, and a chemical plant. As of the census of 2010, there were 6,301 people, 2,541 households, and 1,637 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,006.2 people per square mile (774.2/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 867.2 per square mile (334.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,972. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945.
