Coalton Summary

Coalton is a small village located in Macoupin County, Illinois, United States. The population was estimated to be around 545 in the year 2000. The village is located in the central part of the county, about 10 miles south of Carlinville, the county seat.

History

Coalton was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Carlinville. The village was named after the coal deposits that were discovered in the area. The coal deposits were used to fuel the local economy and the village grew rapidly. By the late 19th century, Coalton had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people.
The village was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a post office. The village also had a school, a church, and a cemetery.
In the early 20th century, the coal industry began to decline and the population of Coalton began to decline as well. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500 people.
