Clayton Summary

Clayton is a small village located in Adams County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Clayton was founded in 1854 by William and Mary Clayton, who had moved to the area from Ohio. The village was originally known as Claytonville, but the name was changed to Clayton in 1858. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Clayton is located at 40°45'25" North, 91°2'25" West (40.756944, -91.040278). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.37 square miles (0.96 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Clayton is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,468.9 people per square mile (567.2/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 619.5 per square mile (239.2/km2).
