Chenoa Summary

Chenoa is a small city located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It is situated along the Illinois River, about 25 miles northeast of Bloomington. The population was 2,062 at the 2010 census.

History

Chenoa was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Chenoa, New York. The town was named after the New York town, which was in turn named after the Iroquois word for "dove." The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town grew slowly. In 1858, the first post office was established, and the first school was built in 1864.
In 1871, the Chicago and Alton Railroad was built through Chenoa, and the town began to grow rapidly. The railroad brought new businesses and industries to the area, and the population increased. By the early 1900s, Chenoa had become a thriving agricultural center, with a variety of businesses and industries.
In the late 19th century, Chenoa was home to a large number of German immigrants. Many of these immigrants were farmers, and they helped to make Chenoa a prosperous agricultural center.

Chenoa is located at 40°41'25" North, 88°51'17" West (40.690278, -88.854722). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all land.

Chenoa's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and other crops. In addition, Chenoa is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,062 people, 817 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,719.2 people per square mile (665.3/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 745.8 per square mile (288.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females.
