History

Chatsworth was founded in 1854 by William and Mary Chatsworth, who had moved to the area from New York. The village was originally known as Chatsworth Station, as it was a stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Chatsworth is located at 40°59'25" North, 88°37'45" West (40.990278, -88.629167). According to the 2010 census, Chatsworth has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Chatsworth is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 501.2 per square mile (193.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
