History

Chatham was founded in 1854 by William and Mary Chatham, who had moved to the area from Kentucky. The village was originally known as Chatham Center, and was incorporated in 1867. The village was named after the Chathams, who were the first settlers in the area.
The village was a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, and was a popular destination for travelers. The railroad brought many new businesses to the area, and the village grew rapidly.
