Casey is a small city located in Clark County, Illinois, United States. It is situated in the east-central part of the state, about 50 miles east of the state capital of Springfield. The population of Casey was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Casey was founded in 1871 by William H. Casey, a railroad contractor. The town was named after him. The first post office was established in 1872. The town was incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, Casey was a major center for coal mining. The town was also home to a number of other industries, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Casey is located at 39°37′N 87°59′W (39.619, -87.983). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Casey's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, including a large dairy farm. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,093.8 people per square mile (808.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,845. About 8.7% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
