Carpentersville Summary

Carpentersville is a village located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.

History

Carpentersville was first settled in 1837 by William and Jane Carpenter, who built a log cabin near the Fox River. The village was incorporated in 1887. The village was named after the Carpenters, who were among the first settlers in the area.

Geography

Carpentersville is located at 42°7′17″N 88°17′45″W (42.1214, -88.2958). According to the 2010 census, Carpentersville has a total area of 8.945 square miles (23.14 km2), of which 8.9 square miles (23.06 km2) (or 99.25%) is land and 0.045 square miles (0.08 km2) (or 0.75%) is water.

Economy

Carpentersville is home to several large industrial and manufacturing companies, including the Carpentersville-based A.O. Smith Corporation, a global leader in water heating and air conditioning products. The village is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 37,691 people, 12,845 households, and 9,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,219.3 people per square mile (1,624.3/km2). There were 13,541 housing units at an average density of 1,515.3 per square mile (585.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 68.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.7% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.2% of the population.
There were 12,845 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
