Camargo Summary

The small village of Camargo, Illinois is located in Douglas County, in the east-central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Embarras River, about 10 miles south of the city of Tuscola. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is part of the larger Tuscola-Camargo-Arcola metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Camargo was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of pioneers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Embarras”, after the river that runs through it. In 1854, the name was changed to “Camargo”, after a small town in Spain. The village was officially incorporated in 1858.
In the late 1800s, Camargo was a thriving agricultural community, with a population of over 1,000 people. The village was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
