Cabery Summary
Cabery is a small village located in Ford County, Illinois, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kankakee–Bradley Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Cabery was founded in 1854 by William Cabery, a farmer from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small village. The village was originally called Caberyville, but the name was changed to Cabery in 1858.
The village grew slowly over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had a population of around 500 people. The village was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 1900s, the village was also home to a large coal mine. The mine was owned by the Cabery Coal Company, and it provided employment for many of the village’s residents. The mine closed in the 1950s, and the village’s population began to decline.
Geography
Cabery is located at 40°59′N 88°17′W (40.983, -88.283). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
The village is located in the Kankakee River Valley, and it is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The Kankakee River flows through the village, and it is a popular spot for fishing and boating.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
