Bluffs Summary

Bluffs, Illinois is a small village located in Scott County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles south of Jacksonville. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Bluffs, Illinois was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The settlement was originally known as “The Bluffs” due to its location on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. The village was officially incorporated in 1854 and was named after the bluffs.
In the late 19th century, Bluffs was a thriving river port town. It was a major stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Mississippi River. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the steamboat industry declined and the railroad bypassed the town. The population of the town began to decline as well, and by the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500 people.
