Augusta Summary

Augusta, Illinois is a small village located in Hancock County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 25 miles south of the city of Quincy. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is part of the larger Quincy-Hannibal-Keokuk metropolitan area.

History

Augusta was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Augusta, Georgia. The village was named after the original settlers’ hometown, and was incorporated in 1839. The village was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were corn, wheat, and oats. In the late 19th century, the village began to grow and develop, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving commercial center.
The village was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. In the early 1900s, the village also had a hotel, a bank, and a post office. The village was also home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Baptist Church, and the Presbyterian Church.
