Ashkum Summary

Ashkum is a small village located in Iroquois County, Illinois, United States. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, about 50 miles south of Chicago. The population of Ashkum was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Ashkum is located at 40°59'25"N 87°59'45"W (40.990278, -87.995833). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

History

The area that is now Ashkum was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Ashkum Station" and was a stop on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad. The name was changed to Ashkum in 1876.
The village was incorporated in 1891. In the early 1900s, the village was a major center for the production of coal and lumber. The coal mines were closed in the 1950s, and the lumber industry declined in the 1970s.
