Arlington Summary

Arlington is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 25 miles northwest of the city. The population was 19,303 at the 2010 census.

History

Arlington was first settled in 1835 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as Dunton, after the first settler, William Dunton. The name was changed to Arlington in 1874, after the Civil War battle of Arlington Heights.
The village was incorporated in 1884. In the late 19th century, Arlington was a farming community, with many of its residents working in the nearby city of Chicago. The village was also home to a number of small businesses, including a brickyard, a creamery, and a lumberyard.
In the early 20th century, Arlington began to experience rapid growth as the city of Chicago expanded outward. The village was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1914, but was later reincorporated as a village in 1921.
