History
Allerton was founded in 1854 by William Allerton, a farmer from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to develop the area. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Allerton was a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, which ran through the village from 1854 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
Geography
Allerton is located at 40°25'25" North, 87°45'45" West (40.423, -87.7625). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Allerton is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
