Sabana Grande is a municipality located in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico. It is part of the San Germán-Cabo Rojo Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Sabana Grande was 16,819.

History

The area of Sabana Grande was originally inhabited by the Taíno Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 16th century. The town was founded in 1733 by Don Juan de Aponte. The town was named after the large grassy plain that was located in the area.
In the 19th century, Sabana Grande was a major center of the sugar industry. The town was also known for its production of tobacco and coffee.

Geography

Sabana Grande is located in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico. It is bordered by the municipalities of San Germán, Lajas, and Cabo Rojo. The town is located on the Caribbean Sea and is approximately 25 miles from the capital city of San Juan.
The terrain of Sabana Grande is mostly flat with some hills. The highest point in the town is Cerro de la Cruz, which is located at an elevation of 1,000 feet.

Climate

Sabana Grande has a tropical climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters. The average temperature in the town is 78°F. The average annual precipitation is approximately 60 inches.
