Puerto Real Summary
Puerto Real is a municipality located in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico, in the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the Mayagüez-San Germán-Cabo Rojo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The municipality is bordered by the municipalities of Cabo Rojo, San Germán, and Lajas. As of the 2010 census, the population of Puerto Real was 8,845.
History
The area of Puerto Real was originally inhabited by the Taíno Indians. The first Spanish settlers arrived in the area in the early 16th century. The settlement was originally known as “Puerto de los Reyes”, and was founded in 1510 by Juan Ponce de León. The settlement was later renamed “Puerto Real” in 1520.
In the late 18th century, the area was used as a port for the export of sugar and coffee. During the 19th century, the area was used as a port for the export of tobacco and other agricultural products.
In 1878 Puerto Real was officially declared a municipality
Geography
Puerto Real is located in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico, in the Caribbean Sea. It is bordered by the municipalities of Cabo Rojo, San Germán, and Lajas. The municipality has a total area of 11.3 square miles (29.3 km2).
The terrain of Puerto Real is mostly flat, with some hills in the northern part of the municipality. The highest point in the municipality is Cerro de la Cruz, which has an elevation of 1,067 feet (325 m).
The climate of Puerto Real is tropical, with an average temperature of 79°F (26°C). The average annual precipitation is 52 inches (1,320 mm).
Economy
The economy of Puerto Real is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The main agricultural products produced in the municipality are sugarcane, coffee, and tobacco.
Tourism is also an important part of the economy of Puerto Real. The municipality is home to several beaches, including Playa de Puerto Real, Playa de la Punta, and Playa de la Cruz.
