La Luisa Summary

La Luisa is a municipality located in the northern region of Puerto Rico, in the northern coast of the island. It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. La Luisa is bordered by the municipalities of San Juan, Toa Baja, Dorado, Vega Alta, and Vega Baja. The municipality has a total area of 8.9 square miles and a population of approximately 11,000 people.

History

The area of La Luisa was originally inhabited by the Taíno Indians. The first Spanish settlers arrived in the area in the early 16th century. The area was originally part of the municipality of San Juan, but in 1838 it was separated and became its own municipality. The name of the municipality was taken from the name of a local Taíno chief, Luisa.
