History

The area of Waimalu was originally inhabited by the native Hawaiians. The first settlers of the area were the Japanese, who arrived in the late 1800s. They established a sugar plantation in the area and built a small village.
In the early 1900s, the area was annexed by the City of Honolulu and became part of the Ewa District. The area was then developed into a residential community.

Economy

The economy of Waimalu is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 2,845 households, and 2,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,845.3 people per square mile (2,637.2/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 2,269.3 per square mile (876.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 33.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 33.2% Asian, 8.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 24.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.54.
In the CDP the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
