Omao Summary

Omao is a small unincorporated community located on the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. It is located in the southeastern part of the island, about 10 miles south of the city of Lihue. The population of Omao was estimated to be around 1,000 people in 2000.

History

The area of Omao was first settled by Polynesian voyagers in the late 1700s. The first Europeans to visit the area were the crew of the British ship HMS Resolution, which arrived in 1778. The area was later settled by Japanese immigrants in the late 1800s. The Japanese immigrants established a small fishing village in the area, which was known as Omao.
The area was later developed by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association in the early 1900s. The association built a sugar mill in the area, which was used to process sugar cane grown in the area. The mill was later closed in the 1950s, and the area was converted to a residential community.

Geography

Omao is located in the southeastern part of Kauai, about 10 miles south of the city of Lihue. The area is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Wailua River to the west.
