Makakilo Summary

Makakilo is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Ewa District on the island of Oahu in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. Makakilo is located on the western side of the island, south of Kapolei and west of Waipahu.

History

Makakilo was originally a sugar plantation town, established in the late 19th century. The area was originally known as Kaheka, and was part of the ahupuaa of Honouliuli. In the early 1900s, the area was renamed Makakilo, which means “observing eyes” in Hawaiian. The area was developed in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the Kapolei master plan.

Geography

Makakilo is located at 21°22′25″N 158°2′17″W (21.373611, -158.038194). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Makakilo is home to several businesses, including a Walmart, a Home Depot, and a Target. The area is also home to several restaurants, including a McDonald’s, a Burger King, and a Panda Express.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,674 people, 3,845 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,811.3 people per square mile (1,086.2/km2). There were 4,039 housing units at an average density of 983.2 per square mile (379.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 33.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 28.2% Asian, 8.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 25.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 13.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the CDP the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $66,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
