Kalaheo is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Kauai County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. Kalaheo is located on the south shore of Kauai, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Lihue.

History

Kalaheo was originally a small agricultural community, with sugarcane and pineapple plantations. The area was first settled in the late 1800s by Japanese immigrants, who worked in the sugarcane fields. In the early 1900s, the area was developed into a residential community, with the construction of a school, a post office, and a church.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 44.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 28.2% Asian, 8.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 17.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $56,250. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
