Kahului Summary
Kahului is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Maui County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 20,146 at the 2010 census. It is the largest census-designated place on the island of Maui and is the commercial and business center of the island.
History
Kahului was originally a fishing village and was first settled by Polynesian immigrants in the late 1700s. The area was later developed by missionaries and whalers in the early 1800s. The town was officially established in 1841 and was named after the Hawaiian word for “gathering place”.
Kahului was an important port for the whaling industry in the 19th century and was the site of the first sugar mill in Hawaii in 1849. The mill was built by the Baldwin family, who were instrumental in the development of the sugar industry in Hawaii. The mill was later replaced by the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum, which is now a popular tourist attraction.
Kahului was also the site of the first public school in Hawaii, which was established in 1851. The town was also the site of the first public library in Hawaii, which was established in 1876.
Kahului was the site of the first airport in Hawaii, which was established in 1927. The airport was later replaced by the Kahului Airport, which is now the main airport on the island of Maui.
Geography
Kahului is located on the northern coast of Maui at 20°53'N, 156°27'W (20.88, -156.45). The CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles, of which 8.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
Kahului is located in the central part of Maui and is bordered by the towns of Wailuku and Makawao to the east, and the towns of Lahaina and Kaanapali to the west. The town is located near the mouth of the Iao Valley and is surrounded by the West Maui Mountains.
Economy
Kahului is the commercial and business center of Maui and is home to many of the island’s major businesses and industries. The town is home to the largest shopping mall in the state, the Queen Kaahumanu Center, which is the largest shopping center in the state.
Kahului is also home to the University of Hawaii Maui College, which is the only four-year college on the island. The college offers a variety of degree programs and is the only college in the state to offer a bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian Studies.
Kahului is also home to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, which is the largest performing arts center in the state. The center hosts a variety of events, including concerts, plays, and art exhibitions.

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,146 people, 6,945 households, and 4,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,444.3 people per square mile. There were 7,845 housing units at an average density of 955.3 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the CDP was 44.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 28.2% Asian, 8.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 17.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
