Hawaiian Beaches is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Puna District of Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census, up from 2,717 at the 2000 census.
Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (2.45%) is water.
History
Hawaiian Beaches was originally a sugar plantation town, established in the early 1900s. The town was named after the nearby beaches, which were popular with the plantation workers. The town was home to a large number of Japanese immigrants, who worked on the plantations.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the sugar industry in Hawaii began to decline. Many of the Japanese immigrants left the town, and the population began to decline.
In the 1970s, the town began to experience a resurgence as the population began to grow again. The town was incorporated in 1978, and the population has continued to grow since then.
Economy
The economy of Hawaiian Beaches is largely based on tourism. The town is home to several resorts and hotels, as well as a number of restaurants and shops. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a number of art galleries and craft stores.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,039 households, and 717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 645.2 people per square mile (248.9/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 279.2 per square mile (107.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 33.45% White, 0.07% African American, 0.15% Native American, 28.45% Asian, 8.45% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 29.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.45% of the population.
There were 1,039 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
