Halawa Summary

Halawa is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. It is located in the ‘Ewa District of the island of O‘ahu. As of the 2010 Census, the CDP had a population of 14,014.

History

The area of Halawa was originally inhabited by the Native Hawaiian people. The area was first settled by Europeans in the late 1700s. The first recorded landowner was John Young, an advisor to King Kamehameha I. He was given the land by the King in 1809. The area was then known as “Halawa”, which means “long shelter” in Hawaiian.
In the late 1800s, the area was developed by the Halawa Sugar Company. The company built a sugar mill and a railroad to transport the sugar cane to the mill. The company also built a village for its workers, which included a school, a church, and a store. The company operated until the early 1900s, when it was forced to close due to competition from other sugar companies.

Geography

Halawa is located at 21°22′17″N 157°56′45″W (21.3714, -157.9459). It is bordered to the north by ‘Aiea, to the east by Pearl City, to the south by ‘Ewa Beach, and to the west by Pearl Harbor.
The total area of Halawa is 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which 0.2 square miles (0.5 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.5 km2) is water. The total area is 8.7% water.

Economy

The economy of Halawa is largely based on tourism and the military. The area is home to several military installations, including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, which is the headquarters of the United States Pacific Command. The base is also home to the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy.
The area is also home to several tourist attractions, including the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

Demographics

As of the 2010 Census, there were 14,014 people, 4,945 households, and 3,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,093.3 people per square mile (2,354.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 2,213.3 per square mile (854.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 44.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 24.3% Asian, 8.2% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 13.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $67,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
