Fern Forest Summary

Fern Forest is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Hilo.

Geography

Fern Forest is located at 19°30′25″N 155°7′17″W (19.506944, -155.121389). It is located in the Puna District of Hawaii County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Fern Forest was first settled in the late 19th century by Japanese immigrants. The area was originally known as "Kamanaiki" and was used for farming and ranching. In the early 20th century, the area was renamed "Fern Forest" after the abundance of ferns in the area.
In the 1950s, the area was developed as a residential community. The population of Fern Forest has grown steadily since then, reaching 1,845 in 2010.

Fern Forest is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby towns and cities for work. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a gas station, a grocery store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 441.3 people per square mile (170.3/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 188.7 per square mile (72.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 55.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 28.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 15.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 8.3% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
