Tiverton Summary

Tiverton is a town located in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. It is located on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, and is bordered by the towns of Little Compton, Portsmouth, and Fall River, Massachusetts. The population was 15,780 at the 2010 census.

History

Tiverton was first settled in 1694 by English settlers from Tiverton, Devon, England. The town was incorporated in 1746, and was named after its English namesake. During the American Revolution, Tiverton was the site of a major battle between the British and American forces. The town was also the site of a major shipbuilding industry in the 19th century.

Geography

Tiverton is located at 41°37′N 71°10′W (41.619, -71.167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.3 square miles (62.9 km2), of which 22.7 square miles (58.9 km2) is land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2) is water.

Economy

Tiverton’s economy is largely based on tourism and fishing. The town is home to several marinas, and is a popular destination for boaters and fishermen. The town also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and art galleries.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 15,780 people, 6,845 households, and 4,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 694.3 people per square mile (267.9/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 331.2 per square mile (127.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.81.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 20.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
