Avenel is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Woodbridge Township, in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is part of the New York metropolitan area and is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Manhattan. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 19,556.
History
The area that is now Avenel was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the original Elizabethtown Tract, which was granted to the first settlers in 1664. The area was known as "Woodbridge Plains" until the mid-19th century, when it was renamed "Avenel" after the Avenel family, who had a large estate in the area.
In the late 19th century, the area began to develop as a residential community. The first post office was established in 1891, and the first school was built in 1895. The area was annexed by Woodbridge Township in 1902.
Geography
Avenel is located at 40°30'25" North, 74°19'45" West (40.506944, -74.329167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 19,556 people, 7,845 households, and 5,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,664.3 per square mile. There were 8,245 housing units at an average density of 1,972.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 64.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.7% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.2% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,912. Males had a median income of $50,813 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
