West Yarmouth Summary

West Yarmouth is a town located in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located on the south side of Cape Cod, and is part of the town of Yarmouth. The population was 8,876 at the 2010 census.

History

West Yarmouth was first settled in 1639 by a group of English settlers from the Plymouth Colony. The area was originally known as "Yarmouth Port" and was part of the town of Yarmouth. In 1803, the town of Yarmouth was divided into two separate towns, Yarmouth and West Yarmouth.

Geography

West Yarmouth is located at 41°41'N 70°14'W (41.68, -70.23). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) (3.45%) is water.

Economy

West Yarmouth is a popular tourist destination, and the town's economy is largely based on tourism. The town is home to several hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts, as well as restaurants, shops, and other businesses catering to tourists. The town is also home to several marinas, which provide boat rentals and other services to visitors.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,876 people, 4,072 households, and 2,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,125.3 people per square mile (433.7/km2). There were 5,845 housing units at an average density of 736.3 per square mile (284.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 4,072 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.64.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $29,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
