Rutland Summary

Rutland is a town located in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,353 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Worcester County by population, behind only Leicester. Rutland is located in central Massachusetts, about 25 miles west of Worcester and 40 miles east of Springfield.

History

Rutland was first settled in 1717 and was officially incorporated in 1713. The town was named after the English county of Rutland. The town was originally part of the town of Leicester, but was separated in 1713.
Rutland was an agricultural town for much of its history, with dairy farming being the primary industry. In the late 19th century, the town began to industrialize, with the opening of several mills and factories. The town also had a thriving granite industry, with several quarries in operation.

Geography

Rutland is located in central Massachusetts, about 25 miles west of Worcester and 40 miles east of Springfield. The town is bordered by Holden to the north, Paxton to the east, Oakham to the south, and Barre to the west.
Rutland is located in the Blackstone Valley, a region of Massachusetts known for its industrial history. The town is located on the banks of the Blackstone River, which runs through the center of town.
The town is mostly rural, with a few small villages scattered throughout. The largest village is Rutland Center, located in the center of town.
