Ayer Summary

Ayer is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Nashua River and is bordered by the towns of Groton, Harvard, Littleton, and Shirley. The population was 7,427 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Ayer was originally inhabited by the Nashaway tribe of Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1667, and the town was officially incorporated in 1871. The town was named after Dr. James Ayer, a prominent local businessman and philanthropist.
In the 19th century, Ayer was a major center for the production of textiles and paper products. The town was home to several large mills, including the Ayer Mill, which was built in 1845 and is now a National Historic Landmark.

Geography

Ayer is located in northeastern Massachusetts at 42°32′N 71°33′W. It is bordered by the towns of Groton to the north, Harvard to the east, Littleton to the south, and Shirley to the west.
The town is situated along the banks of the Nashua River, which flows through the center of town. The river is a major source of recreation in the area, and is popular for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.
The town is located approximately 25 miles northwest of Boston and is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
