History

Attleboro was first settled in 1634 by settlers from Rehoboth, Massachusetts. The town was officially incorporated in 1694 and was named after Attleborough, England. The town was a major center for jewelry manufacturing in the 19th century and was home to several major jewelry companies, including L.G. Balfour Company, which is still in business today.
In the early 20th century, Attleboro was a major center for the textile industry, with several mills located in the city. The city was also home to several major shoe manufacturers, including the former Stride Rite Corporation.

Geography

Attleboro is located at 41°56'N 71°14'W (41.933, -71.233). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 15.9 square miles (41.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) (1.86%) is water.
Attleboro is located in southeastern Massachusetts, approximately 40 miles south of Boston. The city is bordered by North Attleborough to the north, Norton to the east, Mansfield to the south, and Rehoboth to the west.

There were 18,845 housing units at an average density of 1,179.3 per square mile (455.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 17,845 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $48,837, and the median income for a family was $60,890. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,890 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
