Wakefield Summary

Wakefield is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located approximately 10 miles north of Boston and is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 24,932.

History

The area that is now Wakefield was first settled in 1638 by Europeans. The area was originally part of Lynn, Massachusetts, and was known as Lynn Village. In 1812, the area was incorporated as South Reading, and in 1868, it was renamed Wakefield. The town was named after the Wakefield family, who were prominent landowners in the area.

Geography

Wakefield is located at 42°28′N 71°07′W (42.46, -71.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Wakefield is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The town is also home to several large employers, including the Wakefield Co-operative Bank, the Wakefield Public Schools, and the Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,932 people, 9,845 households, and 6,717 families residing in the town. The population density was 3,037.2 people per square mile (1,174.2/km2). There were 10,093 housing units at an average density of 1,223.3 per square mile (471.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $68,837, and the median income for a family was $81,824. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $41,890 for females. The per capita income for the town was $31,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
