History

Sugarcreek was founded in 1814 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as "Sugar Creek" after the creek that runs through the area. The name was later changed to Sugarcreek. The village was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Sugarcreek is located at 40°30'25" North, 81°33'17" West (40.506944, -81.554722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Sugarcreek is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and manufacturing companies. The village is also home to the world's largest cuckoo clock, which is located in the center of town.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 962.2 per square mile (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.45% White, 0.07% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
