Macedonia Summary
Macedonia, Ohio is a city located in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,188 at the 2010 census.
History
Macedonia was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally called Hametown, after the first settler, John Hame. The town was later renamed Macedonia in 1817, after the biblical region of Macedonia. The town was incorporated in 1848.
Macedonia was a rural farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Cleveland. The population of Macedonia increased from 1,000 in 1950 to 11,188 in 2010.
Geography
Macedonia is located at 41°14′N 81°30′W (41.23, -81.50). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Macedonia is home to several large employers, including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,188 people, 4,541 households, and 3,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,384.2 people per square mile (534.3/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 597.3 per square mile (230.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
