Euclid Summary

Euclid, Ohio is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is located along the shore of Lake Erie. The population of Euclid was 48,920 at the 2010 census.

History

Euclid was founded in 1796 by surveyor and Revolutionary War veteran, David Abbott. Abbott named the city after the Greek mathematician, Euclid of Alexandria. The city was incorporated in 1903 and was the first suburb of Cleveland.
In the early 20th century, Euclid was a popular summer resort destination for Clevelanders. The city was home to several amusement parks, including Euclid Beach Park, which opened in 1895 and closed in 1969.

Geography

Euclid is located at 41°34′N 81°33′W (41.567, -81.550). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Euclid is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is home to several large employers, including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the Euclid City Schools.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 48,920 people, 20,945 households, and 12,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,478.3 people per square mile (1,731.3/km2). There were 22,845 housing units at an average density of 2,097.3 per square mile (808.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.2% White, 28.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 20,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,919, and the median income for a family was $51,919. Males had a median income of $38,919 versus $30,919 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,919. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
