Aurora Summary

Aurora, Ohio is a city located in Portage County, Ohio, United States. The population was 15,548 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Aurora is known for its historic downtown, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History

Aurora was founded in 1799 by Ebenezer Sheldon, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn. The first settlers were mostly of English and German descent. The town was incorporated in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Aurora became a popular summer resort for wealthy Clevelanders. The town was home to several large hotels, including the Aurora Inn, which was built in 1891. The inn was destroyed by fire in 1921.

Aurora is located at 41°19′N 81°20′W (41.3167, -81.3333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Aurora is home to several large employers, including the Aurora Plastics Corporation, which manufactures plastic products; the Aurora Bearing Company, which manufactures bearings; and the Aurora Casket Company, which manufactures caskets. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 15,548 people, 6,541 households, and 4,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,711.3 people per square mile (1,433.2/km2). There were 6,945 housing units at an average density of 1,664.3 per square mile (642.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
