Atwater Summary

Atwater is a village located in Portage County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Atwater was founded in 1810 by settlers from Connecticut. The village was named after a local creek, which was named after a settler named Atwater. The village was incorporated in 1837.
Atwater was a major stop on the Ohio and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 19th century. The canal was used to transport goods and people between Cleveland and Akron. The canal was eventually replaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 19th century.

Geography

Atwater is located at 41°7′17″N 81°17′17″W (41.121400, -81.288100). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Atwater's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 767 housing units at an average density of 637.5 per square mile (246.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845.
