History
The city of Wells was founded in 1856 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after the Wells family, who were among the first settlers. The city was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Wells was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a brickyard.

Wells is located at the intersection of Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 14. The city is situated on the Cannon River, which flows through the city. Wells is located approximately 50 miles south of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 545 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.02.
The median age in the city was 39.3 years. 24.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.2% were from 25 to 44; 24.2% were from 45 to 64; and 19.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
