Upsala Summary

Upsala is a small city located in Morrison County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Upsala was founded in 1887 by a group of Swedish immigrants. The city was named after the Swedish city of Uppsala. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the city was incorporated in 1891.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Upsala's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
