Sunburg Summary
Sunburg, Minnesota is a small city located in Kandiyohi County, in the west-central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Chippewa River, about 30 miles west of Willmar. The city has a population of about 1,000 people, and is part of the Willmar Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Sunburg was first settled in the late 1800s by Swedish immigrants. The city was officially incorporated in 1902, and was named after Sunburg, Sweden. The city was originally a farming community, and the main crops were wheat, oats, and barley. In the early 1900s, the city was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the city began to experience a period of growth. The Great Northern Railway built a line through the city, and the Sunburg Creamery was established. The creamery was a major employer in the city, and it remained in operation until the 1970s.
Geography
Sunburg is located in west-central Minnesota, about 30 miles west of Willmar. The city is situated on the banks of the Chippewa River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.
