Springfield Summary

Springfield, Minnesota is a small city located in Brown County in the south-central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Cottonwood River, about 30 miles south of Mankato. The city has a population of approximately 4,000 people and covers an area of about 4.5 square miles.

History

The area that is now Springfield was first settled in the late 1850s by German immigrants. The city was officially incorporated in 1872 and was named after Springfield, Massachusetts.
