Rice Lake Summary

Rice Lake is a city located in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,320 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Barron County. Rice Lake is part of the Rice Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the shore of Rice Lake, a shallow lake that covers about 2,800 acres (11 km2).

History

Rice Lake was first settled in the late 1840s by a group of settlers from New England. The city was named after the nearby lake, which was named for the wild rice that grew in its waters. The city was incorporated in 1872 and has since grown to become the largest city in Barron County.

Geography

Rice Lake is located at 45°33′N 91°48′W (45.55, -91.80). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.

Economy

Rice Lake is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of medical facilities, including a hospital, nursing home, and several clinics.
The city is also home to a number of educational institutions, including the University of Wisconsin-Barron County, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, and Rice Lake High School.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,093 people, 3,323 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,037.2 people per square mile (400.3/km2). There were 3,541 housing units at an average density of 447.2 per square mile (172.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.37% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 3,323 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,917, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,890. About 6.7% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
