Ottertail Summary

Ottertail is a city located in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Otter Tail County.

History

Ottertail was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The city was named after the nearby Otter Tail River, which was named by French explorers in the late 1700s. The city was incorporated in 1881.
In the early 1900s, Ottertail was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a creamery, a lumber mill, a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a harness shop, a furniture store, a hardware store, a drug store, a livery stable, a newspaper, and a telephone exchange.
The city was also home to a number of churches, including the First Presbyterian Church, the First Methodist Church, the First Baptist Church, and the First Congregational Church.

Geography

Ottertail is located at 46°25′N 95°45′W (46.4133, -95.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Ottertail's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, a bank, and a gas station.
The city is also home to a number of recreational activities, including fishing, boating, swimming, and camping.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.3 inhabitants per square mile (351.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 405.8 per square mile (156.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
