Osage Summary

Osage is a small city located in Mitchell County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mitchell County.

History

Osage was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after the Osage Indians, who had previously inhabited the area. The first post office was established in 1857.
Osage was incorporated as a city in 1876. The city was a major center for the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a brickyard, a furniture factory, and a creamery.

Geography

Osage is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 218 and Iowa Highway 9. It is situated on the Cedar River, which flows through the city. The city is located approximately 30 miles north of Mason City and 60 miles south of Minneapolis.
Osage has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land. The city is located in a hilly region of Iowa, with the highest point in the city being the Osage Hill at an elevation of 1,068 feet.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
